Law enforcement report
A person concerned about a child crawling on the ice at the Buford M. Watson Jr. Park skating pond Thursday called Lawrence Police to intervene, police said.
The officer was sent to the pond to check on the welfare of the 5-year-old girl, who was there with her mother, 35.
The officer, who described the ice as “partially frozen” turned the case over to Social and Rehabilitation Services. SRS oversees child welfare cases in the state.
The pond is created annually when park workers pour water into a low patch of ground. At its deepest point, it stands about one foot deep.
Only two to four inches of ice are required for the pond to be safe – a level of freezing parks officials said could have been reached Friday.
