Driver severely injured during turnpike wreck

A Baldwin City man suffered severe head, facial and leg injuries after his vehicle swerved and struck a bridge pillar Friday morning on the Kansas Turnpike more than 10 miles east of Lawrence.

Trooper Ian Ingram, of the Kansas Highway Patrol, said Friday afternoon that Daryl D. Pickens Jr., 36, was undergoing surgery at the Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.

According to the Kansas Turnpike Authority accident report, before 6 a.m. Pickens was driving a 1991 Ford F-150 pickup truck west under the overpass of Kansas Highway 7 in Wyandotte County when the vehicle ran onto the north side of the road and struck the pillar. He had to be extricated from the vehicle.

Ingram said troopers would not be able to determine a cause of the accident until they could talk with Pickens. Ingram also said Pickens had likely suffered severe head trauma.

Friday night, a hospital nursing supervisor said a condition update was unavailable.
