Investigation ongoing in sheriff’s office theft

A search continues more than a week after a loaded handgun and other equipment were stolen from a pickup truck belonging to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

An investigation also is continuing into the incident that occurred the morning of Dec. 21 when the truck was left running and unattended at a deputy’s rural residence. Someone drove off with the truck and it was found abandoned a few hours later in Kansas City, Mo.

When that investigation is completed, information will be forwarded to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office to see whether any state laws were violated by the deputy, Lt. Kari Wempe said.

The sheriff’s office is not releasing any information about possible disciplinary action that might be taken against the officer.

In addition to the gun – a .40-caliber Glock – also stolen were handcuffs, two bulletproof vests, a Glock knife, pepper spray and a riot helmet and shield.
