Jackson blows off shot to nose

Forward: 'It happens'

Brandon Rush wasn’t worried when he saw teammate Darnell Jackson flat on the Allen Fieldhouse floor three minutes into Saturday’s rout of Miami of Ohio at Allen Fieldhouse.

“We all know Darnell is tough. That was just a little brush on the shoulder to him,” Rush said of the rugged 6-foot-8, 250-pound Kansas University senior, who had his nose inadvertently flattened by 238-pound Tim Pollitz.

Not to worry: A dazed Jackson, who was helped off the floor, returned to the game shortly after, finishing with 14 points in 20 minutes in the Jayhawks’ 78-54 victory.

“Man, I thought my nose was broken. It’s been a long time since I felt pain like that,” said Jackson, who cashed a 15-foot jumper for KU’s fourth point of the game shortly before the mishap.

“I wasn’t mad. It happens. It’s a physical sport,” Jackson said with a shrug.

Jackson and fellow inside player Darrell Arthur each scored 14 points to lead the Jayhawks’ balanced scoring attack. Arthur had 10 boards and Jackson eight.

“A lot of guys came out focused. We attacked the basket,” Jackson said. “It’s our job. We did a terrible job of that against Georgia Tech (in a 71-66 victory on Tuesday in Atlanta).

“‘Shady’ did a great job today,” he added of Arthur, who hit seven of 14 shots.

Sasha Kaun had five points and three boards in 13 minutes, while Cole Aldrich contributed four points and three boards in 13 minutes.

“Cole is coming,” Self said of the Minnesota freshman center. “He’s not had a chance to play much. He plays 13 today, so Sasha only plays 13. It’s one of those deals, it (playing time) may be adjusted game to game. Look at ‘Shady’ and Darnell. They only played 23 and 20 minutes, and we’re talking about how well they played. If they played 32 minutes, their numbers would be really good.”

Self basically has been using a nine-man rotation lately. At one point Saturday, he had Russell Robinson guard one of Miami’s inside players. Rodrick Stewart has also played forward on occasion.

“I think that’s what he’ll be going with as long as we stay healthy,” senior guard Robinson said, knocking on wood. “I think everybody’s starting to know their roles.”
