Mayo leads class of 1-year wonders

Self: 'O.J. made a good choice'

O.J. Mayo is considered a lock to enter the NBA Draft after one season at the University of Southern California.

Other “one-and-done” players figure to include Indiana’s Eric Gordon, Memphis’ Derrick Rose, Kansas State’s Michael Beasley and UCLA’s Kevin Love, who arrived letting everybody know they could be in it for the short haul.

Kansas University coach Bill Self said he’s not opposed to recruiting, and landing, a player on campus for only one year because of the NBA’s 19-year-old age rule.

“There is no coach in America to say he wouldn’t take them. Those guys are really talented,” said Self, whose Jayhawks will face Mayo and his 21.3 scoring average at 1 p.m. Sunday at Galen Center in Los Angeles.

“I’d love to get a one-year guy that doesn’t go into it saying ‘one year,’ but if he performs so well he has to leave, we’d (still) be better off. You get ’em for one; hopefully they’ll stay for two.

“We can talk about O.J., Eric, Derrick Rose or whomever … our talent level is pretty good. We are not apologizing for that. We have as good of players as anybody.”

Self said some of the current Jayhawks were signed with him realizing they might not stay long.

“Not one, but short (stays),” Self said. “Maybe Brandon one. Julian (Wright) we knew he wouldn’t be here all four, and there’s others we knew could potentially not be here all four. It will not affect the way we recruit.”

Self said he wouldn’t complain if a player called him and asked to be recruited as Mayo did Tim Floyd at media-rich USC.

“He didn’t call me,” Self said with a smile. “Very rarely do you get guys where they recruit you. We’ve gotten commitments from guys we didn’t spend much time on and not gotten guys we’ve spent years on. The higher-level guy … they are looking for the perfect scenario they can go in and make an immediate difference. It’s pretty apparent to me O.J. made a good choice.

“Patrick Patterson went to Kentucky; Darrell (Arthur) and Sherron (Collins) came here. Michael Beasley goes to K-State and O.J. to USC; Kyle Singer to Duke; Kevin Love UCLA; Eric Gordon to Indiana. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The traditional schools are still getting guys,” Self added.

¢ Minutes: Brandon Rush is healthy enough to play as many minutes on Sunday against USC as he did against Arizona, but likely will not, Self said.

“I don’t know if I want to play him 35 minutes now. I don’t think it’s best for the team,” Self said, realizing Rush is about 85 to 90 percent recovered from June 1 right ACL surgery. “(But) unless something unforeseen happens, his minutes will not be determined by his health.”

¢ Reed OK: KU freshman guard Tyrel Reed, who missed Wednesday’s game against Florida Atlantic because of a sprained ankle, should be able to play Sunday, Self said.

¢ Jackson to start: Self indicated inside player Darnell Jackson would start his second straight game with Sasha Kaun coming off the bench.

¢ Lewis a starter: USC sophomore guard Dwight Lewis, 6-5 from Metairie, La., averages 10.7 points a game in a starting role for the 6-1 Trojans.

“Dwight is having a terrific start. We are familiar with him. We recruited him,” Self said of the player who actually committed to KU, but withdrew the commitment and ultimately chose Tim Floyd’s USC program.
