Record money raised at Community Education Breakfast

Lawrence education leaders highlighted the district’s achievements in the arts, and announced record fund-raising numbers for the sixth annual Community Education Breakfast this morning.

Approximately 450 people, including business leaders and elected officials, attended the breakfast at the Lawrence Holidome, 200 McDonald Drive.

Nashville musician Chuck Mead, a 1979 Lawrence High School graduate, gave a humorous keynote speech and also played the guitar on stage with Superintendent Randy Weseman. Mead said his experience growing up in Lawrence schools helped foster his love and interest in music.

“I learned a whole lot by just showing up, and I was allowed to participate in what I was interested in,” Mead said.

Weseman also recognized 13 Lawrence students for their achievements in the fine arts.

Susan Esau, executive director of the Lawrence Schools Foundation, said the event has raised almost $47,000. A record 51 sponsors contributed to the event.

The money will helps the district in several ways, including providing funds for the early childhood program and arts programs, she said.
