Former teacher to make court appearance today
A former Lawrence High School teacher, who admitted this year to having sex with a student, will appear in Douglas County District Court this afternoon.
Meredith Kane, 24, had been out on $15,000 bond since March and was booked in the Douglas County Jail Monday evening because authorities accused her of violating a court order barring her from contact with the 16-year-old victim or any witness in the case.
According to Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson’s office, Kane will make a court appearance at 2:45 p.m. via a closed-circuit television from the jail, which is common in most first appearance.
Branson’s staff said the district attorney would not comment on the case until after the court appearance. A message left this morning for Kane’s attorney, James Rumsey, had not been returned by 11:15 a.m.
Kane pleaded guilty in July to one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child for acts that occurred between August 2006 and March of this year with a male student who was 15 at the time.
Her sentencing is currently scheduled for Oct. 12.
