A former Lawrence High School teacher, who admitted this year to having sex with a student, will appear in Douglas County District Court this afternoon.

Meredith Kane, 24, had been out on $15,000 bond since March and was booked in the Douglas County Jail Monday evening because authorities accused her of violating a court order barring her from contact with the 16-year-old victim or any witness in the case.

According to Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson's office, Kane will make a court appearance at 2:45 p.m. via a closed-circuit television from the jail, which is common in most first appearance.

Branson's staff said the district attorney would not comment on the case until after the court appearance. A message left this morning for Kane's attorney, James Rumsey, had not been returned by 11:15 a.m.

Kane pleaded guilty in July to one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child for acts that occurred between August 2006 and March of this year with a male student who was 15 at the time.

Her sentencing is currently scheduled for Oct. 12.

If she really did have contact with this student after being ordered not to, maybe she should be held in jail until sentencing. And maybe the failure to comply with the order should be taken into consideration at sentencing time.

She lacks either self-control or good judgment - or both.

I am going to go ahead and say she lacks both and much more!
