When disasters struck in southern Kansas earlier this year, first Kansas University then the rest of the Regents system announced that students could apply for tuition waivers.
KU announced Monday that 38 students applied for the waivers, with 28 being approved, said Diane Goddard, KU associate vice provost and comptroller. Of the 10 that were not approved, nine were from students who had already paid their tuition in full.
KU spokeswoman Jill Jess said that those nine students paid their tuition primarily through financial aid, such as loans of scholarships. Consequently that money could not go to anything but their education.
The 10th student did not meet eligibility requirements set out by the Board of Regents, Jess said. Students who were eligible came from 43 Kansas counties that were damaged by tornadoes in May or flooding in June and July.
