Fieldhouse getting new roof

Allen Fieldhouse, which has leaked in spots since the microburst of March 2006, is getting a new roof.

Workers from Boone Brothers Roofing of Olathe have started work on the roof and will continue to replace it in sections, with the job expected to be completed at the end of September.

The project, priced at $1,125,500, is not costing the athletic department any money. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is paying 75 percent of the cost, and the state, which allocated funds for repair of state buildings, the other 25 percent.

“Soon after the microburst, we knew there was a problem,” KU associate athletic director Jim Marchiony said. “We just needed a time to get it fixed where the activities were at the lowest point in Allen Fieldhouse. There are a few weeks here we have a window to get the job done. The leaks were getting more constant and widespread, so it had to be done before the 2007-08 season.”

KU’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will be able to work out in the fieldhouse during placement of the new roof, which will look the same as the former roof.

The fieldhouse floor was recently refinished. The size of the Jayhawk has not changed.

¢ Lee on board: Michael Lee officially will be tapped a student assistant in KU’s basketball office Wednesday. Lee, who played at KU from 2001 to ’05, played professionally in France last year. We’re glad they’ve chosen to be part of this great legacy that they can carry on. This is going to be a great four years of their lives, and we’re happy to be part of it.”
