Lions roar back

DeBiasse's hits lift LHS

? For the second time in two nights, the Lawrence High baseball team overcame a late deficit for a victory in the River City Classic.

Lawrence High's Aaron Rea tries to turn a double play. Rea scored the Lions' winning run Friday in Kansas City, Kan.

The Lions trailed Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst by two runs in the middle of the sixth inning but roared back, thanks largely to Nick DeBiasse’s hitting prowess, for an 8-7 victory Friday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

LHS trailed by 6 before blasting Omaha (Neb.) Creighton Prep, 14-7, Thursday.

“We realized we’re never out of a game,” DeBiasse said. “As long as there are outs on the board, we still have a chance.”

DeBiasse drove in four runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh. Rockhurst relievers struggled with control, loading the bases for DeBiasse, who singled to score teammate Aaron Rea.

“It’s one of those opportunities that doesn’t come around so often,” DeBiasse said of his game-winning hit.

The Lions’ rally began in the previous inning, when they capitalized on two singles and four walks to score three runs.

“We were just patient and let them come to us,” LHS coach Brad Stoll said.

DeBiasse put LHS on the board with a three-run homer to deep left-center field in the bottom of the third. He said it was one of the longest hits of his career.

“Nick absolutely hammered it,” Stoll said.

Dorian Green started for the Lions and pitched five innings, striking out six and allowing five runs. Closer Jordan Guntert earned the win for LHS.

The Lions will play Blue Springs (Mo.) at 4:30 p.m. today at Kansas University’s Hoglund Ballpark.
