Scholar to speak at Japanese studies lecture

A renowned Japan scholar will speak next week at the Dole Institute of Politics on the Kansas University campus.

Harry Harootunian, professor emeritus at the University of Chicago and professor of history and East Asian Studies at New York University, will deliver the Grant Goodman Distinguished Lecture in Japanese Studies at 7:30 p.m. Monday. The lecture, “The Good Japanese: Disciplining Democracy,” will focus on Japan’s efforts following World War II to reshape citizens to resemble the imperial subjects of prewar Japan.

The lecture is sponsored by the Center for East Asian Studies and is named after the professor emeritus who directed the center during its formative years.
