Lions strike first but fall, 4-1

Lawrence High goalie Emma Lumpe, center, dives for a save.

The Shawnee Mission West girls soccer team beat Lawrence High, 4-1, at the Youth Sports Inc. fields by dominating possession of the ball, attempting 22 more shots on goal than the Lions on Tuesday night.

“Percentages are always going to be in your favor once you get that many shots,” LHS coach Matt Anderson said.

LHS, however, struck first as senior Abby Vestal rocketed a shot in the goal from about 30 yards out with 28:32 left in the first half.

“She’s definitely got the range,” Anderson said. “That’s for sure.”

Almost 10 minutes later, West, a team known for its crossing passes and shooting, responded with the first of three first-half goals. Junior Katie Lewis scored with 20:58 left, junior Alix Schiraldi scored with 13:40 and junior Adriana Coleman scored with 25.7 seconds.

“(We made) mistakes on our side,” Vestal said. “And they punished us for it.”

Heading into the game, Anderson emphasized playing at an intense pace, and he said his 3-3-1 team may have tired after its strong performance during the first 20 minutes of the half.

“We went so hard so fast,” he said. “We ran out of gas a little bit … We definitely fell out of form.”

Holding a commanding 3-1 halftime lead, West, a talented 5-1 team featuring future Kansas University player Sierra Miramontez, effectively had the game won.

“They’ve got gifted people up front,” Anderson said. “They do things innately that we still are catching up to.”

The Lions, however, responded with strong defensive play during the second half, allowing only one goal, by junior Lindsay Roberts.

Anderson said the more conservative defensive alignment – a 4-4-2 instead of a 3-4-3 – helped the Lions nearly hold the Vikings scoreless. He also credited sophomore Heather Miller, who stepped in at sweeper for freshman Olivia Dykes.

The second half featured little scoring but a strong gust, which resulted in some errant shots.

“There was absolutely no wind in the first half,” Vestal said. “And all the sudden the wind just picked up randomly. It was kind of a change.”

The game also served as a reunion of sorts for LHS sophomore Emma Lumpe. West coach Sarah Gonzalez independently trained the goalie, who battled 32 shots on goal, during the offseason.

“I kind of wanted to prove that l learned something,” Lumpe said.

Gonzalez also approached Lumpe after the game, instructing her pupil to “keep her head up.” More specific tutelage will come.

“We’ll get to hear that when we get together this summer,” Lumpe said.

Before that meeting Lumpe and the Lions will try to secure their first Sunflower League win. The next opportunity comes Thursday when LHS visits Olathe Northwest.
