Bomb squad investigates suspicious container

A bomb squad was called in from Johnson County to remove what Lawrence police said was a strange looking container from a residence in town.

Residents of a house in the 2700 block of Belle Haven Drive were cleaning out the house when they happened upon a cylinder-shaped container.

Unsure of what it was or what was inside of it, the residents called police to investigate.

“It was strange looking to me,” said Lawrence police Capt. Ray Urbanek. “I called Overland Park to see if they knew what it was by describing it.”

The Overland Park Police Department sent a bomb unit to investigate.

“They did some checking and I don’t know that they were really sure what it was,” Urbanek said. “But they loaded it up and took it out of there.”

He said police suspect that it contained some sort of propellant.

The incident ended shortly before 10 p.m.
