Topeka man charged with auto thefts

A Topeka man suspected in a rash of western Lawrence auto thefts and car burglaries was charged Tuesday in court.

James R. Evans Jr., 29, made his first appearance in Douglas County District Court and pleaded not guilty to the eight counts he faces. Among the charges is one stemming from a short chase with police officers Monday morning before they arrested him. Police were called Monday after a truck was stolen. They began chasing the driver, who fled.

The other charges against Evans are linked to car burglaries and two auto thefts in a western Lawrence neighborhood. Police have recovered both of those vehicles.

Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel scheduled Evans’ next hearing for 2 p.m. Monday.

According to court records, Evans will retain attorney Steven Rosel of Topeka. Judge Jack Murphy was assigned to the case.
