MCPHERSON — Lawrence High junior Madison Bertrand made good on the first attempt in a second penalty-kick overtime, and Salina South misfired on its ensuing attempt, giving the Lions a 3-2 victory Monday night in the championship game of the McPherson Invitational girls soccer tournament.
The score was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, with Bertrand and senior Abby Vestal each netting goals for LHS (3-0).
After two scoreless golden-goal overtimes, the format switched to penalty kicks. The two teams tied, 4-4, in the first penalty-kick phase, necessitating the golden-goal shootout.
Vestal and junior Kaela Severa were named to the all-tournament team, with Vestal awarded MVP honors.
LHS will face crosstown rival Free State at 7 tonight at the YSI complex.
