There has to be someone, somewhere in the Cornhusker State who does not root for the Nebraska football team.

Kearney native Micah Brown just hasn’t located that person yet.

“Everybody in Nebraska loves Nebraska,” said Brown, Kansas University’s 6-foot, 178-pound red-shirt freshman wide receiver.

“Growing up, none of my friends liked another team. You’d have to be from out of state (not to love the Huskers),” he added.

“They are diehard fans in Nebraska, unbelievable diehards.”

There was no bigger Husker fan than Brown : until he arrived at KU for the 2003-04 school year.

“My dad played there. He started at wide receiver,” Brown said of dad, Todd Brown, who is seventh on NU’s all-time receiving charts with 1,092 yards worth of catches from 1980-82.

“He played with (quarterback) Turner Gill and was coached by Tom Osborne, who is a great family friend. My dad watched Turner Gill’s first game at Buffalo (where he is now head coach). We are really good friends with all those coaches. Coach Osborne is a great man of integrity. My dad admires him a lot.”

Todd Brown, who owns Brown Church Development (a church design and church building company in Kearney) has no mixed loyalties for Saturday’s KU-Nebraska game, set for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

“Nebraska was awesome to my dad. It was a great school for my dad, but I’m his son. He’ll be wearing blue. My family will be wearing blue to the game,” said Brown, who will have 16 relatives at the game.

“All my friends from high school will be there. They all go to (school in) Lincoln. There will be a lot of people I know there.”

Brown, who has played sparingly thus far, actually arrived at KU on track scholarship. He ranked in the top 10 in the Big 12 in the triple jump, yet gave up track after one season.

“I missed football a lot,” said Brown, an honorable mention all-state and first-team all-league pick his senior year at Kearney High.

“I missed the game. I decided if I wanted to play, I mght as well do it now so I would never have any regrets. I thought I’d give it a shot. For right now, I’m done doing track. I’d like to get back out there sometime. I was a triple jumper. Doing football : it doesn’t go well with that event.”

KU quarterback Adam Barmann sees a big future for Brown on the football team.

“Micah can really run. He is one of the fastest guys on our whole team,” Barmann said. “He can flat-out fly. Throughout this past offseason and preseason, his hands have come so far. He can help us in the future. He has just got to keep working like anybody else. Look at a lot of guys here working at it, keep at it and their number is called.”

Of his future, Brown said: “You know what, I don’t know. I’m not the coach. If I didn’t think I could play, I wouldn’t be doing it, working so hard. God will decide if I play or not.”
