Kansas made an incredible come back before falling to No. 21 Nebraska 39-32 in overtime in Lincoln. The Jayhawks turned the ball over in each of its first two possessions, both coming on Barmann interceptions. Quickly the Jayhawks rebounded from a 17-0 deficit, posting 15 unanswered points in the second half to take a 25-24 lead with 6 minutes left in the game.

The Huskers responded with another 75-yard touchdown pass from Taylor and a successful 2-point conversion, NU regained control at 32-25. The lead was short-lived as KU’s Barmann found Murph for the tying touchdown with 46 seconds left before regulation.

Twice in the game, the Jayhawks lost quality scoring opportunities on turnovers. However, KU also forced three crucial fumbles while giving up four of their own. In addition, Kansas lost points on a blocked PAT after the second touchdown and an incomplete 2-point conversion pass that would have given the Jayhawks a 27-25 lead and the win on Murph’s late fourth quarter touchdown.

Barmann showed resilience after his poor start by finishing the game 27-54 for 405 yards and two touchdowns. Murph and Fields both caught eights passes on the night for 129 and 108 yards respectively. Murph also scored the game-tying touchdown. Cornish led the Jayhawks on the ground with 144 yards on 32 attempts and one touchdown.

NU quarterback Taylor finished the game with 393 yards on 16-32 attempts and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Hardy recorded two touchdowns of his own on four catches and 157 yards. KU extended it’s record to 18 straight games without letting an opponent’s running back rush for more than 100 yards. Kansas kept last week’s standout for Nebraska, Marlon Lucky, to 38 yards on 13 attempts and no touchdowns.

Combined both teams totaled over 1000 yards of offense, while the Jayhawks held onto the ball nearly 10 minutes longer than the Cornhuskers.

The loss adds to the Jayhawk’s road woes as their road losing streak extends to seven and drops their overall record to 3-2 and 0-1 in the Big 12. Next up for Kansas will be a homecoming game against Texas A-M at 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Overtime

Henry couldn’t separate from NU secondary and stumbled as a fade throw by Barmann into the left corner of the endzone fell over his head. On a 4th-and 5, Kansas needed a touchdown to stay alive. The ‘Hawks lost to Nebraska 39-32 in overtime.

KU was faced with a crucial 4th-and 1 on the NU 15. Cornish received a toss from Barmann running to his right, turned the corner and made the first down mark. Barmann found Murph for a gain of five yards, moving the ball to the NU 9. From there, a Barmann pass was almost intercepted as it bounced off the chest of Henry. On third down, a low snap and Nebraska blitz forced Barmann to throw the ball away into the endzone, setting up the do-or-die fourth down play for the Jayhawks.

Head coach Mark Magino challenged the Nebraska pass to Swift on the 1 yard line. Swift made the catch on the left side going out-of-bounds but lost the ball as it crossed the goal line. Officials determined the play would stand as called on the field and the ‘Hawks lose their only timeout. Nebraska takes the 1st -and goal on the 1 yard line. From there Cody Glenn ran the ball in for the touchdown. A good PAT and the Huskers now lead 39-32. The Jayhawks must score a touchdown and a PAT or 2-point conversion to either keep the game going or win.

Kansas will play defense first in the overtime period.

Regulation

Anthony Webb breaks up a pass intended for Hardy – the Husker’s last attempt to score before the end of regulation. KU out-scored Nebraska 22-8 in the second half. A 32-32 tie sends the game into overtime – this will be the second overtime game for the Jayhawks this season. KU lost a double OT decision to Toledo 37-31 on Sept. 15.

Barmann rolled to his right and found a Murph on a roll-back pass. Murph cut across the field to the left corner of the endzone for a KU touchdown with 46 seconds left in the game. The play before, NU’s Andre Jones tipped a Barmann throw intended for an outstretched Murph. Webb’s PAT ties the game at 32 all.

Barmann is now 24-46 passing with 365 yards total.

The Jayhawks enter Nebraska territory with a first down on the NU 38 yard line as 1:04 was left on the clock.

KU running back Jon Cornish leaves the field limping for the third time tonight with what appears to be cramps in his legs.

With less than five minutes to play, Nebraska fumbled the snap but running back Brandon Jackson covered the ball. The ensuing play, Huskers’ QB Taylor found receiver Farntz Hardy down the left sideline for a 75-yard touchdown pass. NU opted for the 2-point conversion and found success with a Nate Swift catch, giving the Cornhuskers a 32-25 lead over KU with 4:13 remaining in the game.

Kansas got its first lead of the game on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Barmann to Fine. The Jayhawks were forced to attempt a 2-point conversion after the missed extra point in the third quarter. NU’s Jay Moore stuffed Barmann on the 2-point conversion attempt. With 6:34 left in the game, KU leads 25-24 over Nebraska.

KU picks up a first down on the Nebraska 1 yard line with 6:48 remaining on the clock and trailing 24-19.

Kansas’ offense continues to have its way, as Barmann connects with Henry on a 10-yard pass and McAnderson plows through the NU defense for two solid gains on the ground.

Barmann throws a bomb to Murph from inside the KU 20, gaining 46 yards on the play. KU now has the ball on the Nebraska 43 with 10:43 on the clock.

Injury update: Eric Washington regained feeling and started moving his limbs while on the way to the hospital.

Jonathan Lamb couldn’t hold on to a third down pass from Barmann as he was pressured by NU’s Grixby. Tucker punts for KU with 14:40 in the fourth quarter.

KU linebacker Mike Rivera made several pressure runs to keep Taylor from finding open receivers. Cornerback Justin Thorton also batted away a promising touchdown pass from Taylor to Hardy. Kansas took control with less than a minute before the fourth quarter on their own 10 yard line.

Barmann leads Taylor – the third most efficient passer in the nation – 247 to 245 passing yards for the game.

Murph caught the Nebraska punt and called for a fair catch at the KU 25 with 2:41 on the clock. If Kansas can make a touchdown drive on this possession, the ‘Hawks could secure the lead for the first time all game after starting off 17-0.

Kansas drives inside the Nebraska 20 to the 16 yard line but settles for a 35-yard field goal by Webb. The Jayhawks cut NU’s lead to 24-19 with 5:45 left in the third quarter.

An update on injured Washington: still immobilized on a stretcher, he is being taken to a local hospital for examination.

Corner back Aqib Talib recoverd the third Nebraska fumble, this time forced by KU linebacker Artist Wright. Kansas took over control of the football on their own 39 yard line with 8:37 left in the third quarter, trailing 24-16.

KU’s Washington was down on the field after taking a tackle head on from Marlon Lucky. He was attended to by Kansas staff while he lay on the field for several minutes. Washington was immobilized on a stretcher as the number of personnel surrounding him increased. It appeared Washington was coherent, blinking his eyes as he ws carted off the field.

Brorsen came from the back side and stripped the ball away from NU quarterback Taylor forcing Nebraska’s second fumble of the game. KU linebacker Joe Mortensen recovered the ball on the NU 8 yard line. Barmann pitched off to a running Jon Cornish who took the ball down the right side into the endzone for Kansas’ second touchdown of the night. A high snap on the point-after caused a loose ball. Kicker Anthony Webb covered the football, but lost it to a Nebraska defender Bo Ruud who made it to midfield before being tackled.

KU now trails Nebraska 24-16 three minutes into the second half.

Half time

The Jayhawks enter halftime trailing the Huskers 24-10. Nebraska struck first and struck quickly scoring a 75-yard touchdown pass from Taylor to Nunn on the game’s second play from scrimage. Kansas’ quarterback Adam Barman then gave up two interceptions on his first six pass attempts. Things didn’t improve for KU as the team was forced to punt on its next two possesions and – other than a first down from a pass interference penalty midway in the first quarter – the Jayhawks didn’t make a first down until 14:05 in the second quarter during its fifth drive.

Twice the ‘Hawks had the ball in the redzone and lost possession. The first turnover coming off Barmann fumble and the second an underthrown pass by Barmann that was intercepted in the endzone. In addition tight end Derek Fine had two dropped passes in the endzone that could have been crucial in the momentum of the game for Kansas.

Even after a dismal start for the Jayhawks, KU still managed to pick up 278 yards offense compared to Nebraska’s 311. Barmann went 11-24 for 182 yards in addition to his four turnovers. Toward the end of the first half, Barmann connected with Dexton Fields on several key conversions. Fields caught four passes for 74 yards in the first 30 minutes.

Opponent QB Zac Taylor completed 10-19 for 243 yards and three touchdowns. Nebraska’s receiver Terrence Nunn, who scored the game’s first touchdown, finished the half with three receptions for 98 yards.

Kansas mounted a drive with 1:20 left before halftime, making it to the Nebraska 13 yard line. Barmann again looked for Fine in the endzone, but the pass slipped through Fine’s hands as NU’s Shanle pressured. KU took two timeouts in attempt to find a touchdown play, but settled for a 31-yard field goal by Webb with seconds on the clock. Going into halftime KU trails Nebraska 24-10.

Barmann threw his third interception of the night looking for receiver Marcus Henry in the endzone. NU’s Andre Jones easily picked off the underthrown ball for Nebraska’s fourth forced turnover of the night. Before the interception, Barmann nearly connected with tight end Derek Fine for the touchdown, but Fine couldn’t bring in the pass. The turnover was the second time KU has lost possession in the redzone tonight.

Nebraska took over possession on 20 yard line with 2:20 before halftime, leading KU 24-7.

The Huskers capitalize on KU’s turnover as quarterback Zac Taylor roled to his right finding an open Frantz Hardy downfield for the 78-yard touchdown pass. Kansas was on the verge of scoring before the fumble by Barmann, but now trail NU 24-7 with 6:51 on the clock.

Barmann made his third turnover of the game on a quarterback option play on the Nebraska 5 yard line. NU’s Tierre Green recovered the fumble for the Huskers on their own 3.

Nebraska was forced to punt on the ensuing possession. Brian Murph called for a fair catch on the KU 33 yard line with 9:55 left in the second quarter. KU trails Nebraska 17-7.

Brandon McAnderson ran the ball into endzone for the 1-yard touchdown run. The Jayhawks drove 95 yards, making three first downs in the process. In their fifth possession of the game, Barmann found Dexton Fields for two of those first downs. KU cut the Nebraska lead to 17-7 with 11:45 in the second quarter.

Nebraska drove the ball 92 yards in 11 plays taking 4:30 minutes off the clock before adding a 21-yard field goal by Jordan Congdoon to their lead. KU’s Eric Washington broke up a Taylor pass attempt to Nunn in the endzone on a 3rd-and 3 to force the NU field goal. The Huskers lead 17-0 with 23 seconds on the clock.

The Jayhawks can’t capitalize on good starting position on their own 44 yard line and is forced to punt. Nebraska starts on their 4 yard line with 4:33 left in the first quarter.

Barmann throws deep intended for Brian Murph but a defensive pass interference penalty was called on Nebraska’s Courtney Grixby. The penalty moved the ball to the NU 43 yard line for KU.

Nebraska went three-and-out and was forced to punt. Kansas will take the ball on their own 44 yard line trailing Nebraska 14-0 with 6:05 in the first quarter. KU has yet to make a first down in its first three possessions.

On the first play of the Kansas drive, Shanle picked off his second Barmann pass of the night on the KU 25 yard line. Shanle returned the ball 19 yards to the KU 6. Taylor finds Todd Peterson for the 6-yard touchdown. Nebraska takes a 14-0 lead with 10:20 in the first quarter.

KU’s defense force Nebraska to punt on its second possession. Nebraska’s punt rolls to the KU 1 yard line with 11:10 left in the first quarter.

On 3rd-and 1, Barmann threw his first interception of the game. Nebraska’s Andrew Shanle intercepted the ball and was brought down for no gain on the play. The Huskers regain possession on the KU 49 yard line.

The Huskers strike first on the second play of the game. Quarterback Zac Taylor finds a wide open Terrence Nunn on the left for the 75 yard touchdown. Nebraska takes a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game. It took Nebraska 2 plays to go 80 yards in 58 seconds.

Game Preview

The Kansas Jayhawks will play its second road trip of the season at 6 p.m. tonight against the No. 21 Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Neb. This meeting is the first conference game for both teams with the same 3-1 record.

Nebraska hopes to avenge last year’s surprising 40-15 loss to the Jayhawks at Memorial Stadium a win that broke NU’s 36 game win streak over the ‘Hawks. Since the setback, the Cornhuskers have won six of their last seven games with the only blemish coming from a 28-10 loss at the University of Southern California in week No. 3. In their three wins, the ‘Huskers have won by 39 points or more, including last week’s 56-0 shut out of Troy. The win was the break out game for sophomore running back Marlon Lucky ‘Husker fans had been waiting for. The highly-touted recruit from North Hollywood, Calif., carried the ball 10 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns. NU quarterback Zach Taylor has also proved his efficiency, throwing 872 yards including eight touchdown passes with only two interceptions.

While last season’s victory over Nebraska snapped the Cornhuskers’ hex, the Jayhawks have yet to beat the Cornhuskers in Lincoln since 1968. The ‘Hawks are coming off a 13-7 win over South Florida at home last week in which backup quarterback senior Adam Barmann replaced the injured redshirt sophomore Kerry Meier. Barmann, in his first start since the 2005 season, complete 25-35 passes and threw for 273 yards. According to head coach Mark Mangino, it’s still undetermined who will start at quarterback for the Jayhawks tonight. In KU’s last trip to Lincoln, Barmann took the snaps, finishing the game with 200 yards passing in the 14-8 loss.

The Jayhawks lost their first road trip of the season, falling to Toledo 37-31 in double overtime. The ‘Hawks have yet to win a road game since the 31-14 win over Missouri on Nov. 20, 2004, in Columbia.

This is the 101 consecutive match-up between the two teams the longest uninterrupted series in NCAA Division I-A history.
