Ottawa man in hospital after U.S. 59 wreck

A 21-year-old Ottawa man was flown to the hospital early Monday after a head-on wreck on U.S. Highway 59 in southern Douglas County.

Matthew B. Manning’s condition was unavailable Monday evening at University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kan. He was driving south in a Toyota pickup and about 8 a.m. he drifted into the northbound lane just south of North 700 Road and hit a Ford truck driven by Frederick R. Smith, 51, Pittsburg.

The wreck happened near Zarco 66, 718 E. 1300 Road.

Both men were wearing seat belts, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Smith, who police said tried to avoid the wreck, was not injured.
