Baldwin Junction’s new look complete

Kansas Department of Transportation workers finished roadwork Tuesday and turned the Baldwin Junction 10 miles south of Lawrence into a four-way stop.

KDOT installed rumble strips, stop bars and new signs and lights on U.S. Highway 59 one week after a motorist was killed after trying to drive across U.S. 59 – which had no stop sign – from U.S. Highway 56.

The new stop signs went active about 2 p.m. In the first two hours, Douglas County Sheriff’s officers issued six citations to drivers for failing to stop at the intersection, said Lt. Kari Wempe, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.

KDOT decided to change the intersection to a four-way stop after two Spring Hill teenagers died following an April accident there. Residents had complained about visibility and the speed limit.

The change will be temporary, as KDOT plans to transform U.S. 59 into a four-lane road between Lawrence and Ottawa in the next few years.
