Serial rapist gets two life sentences

? A man who admitted to sexually assaulting seven women and beating another was sentenced Friday to two consecutive life terms.

Kevin L. Hayslett, 29, pleaded guilty in July in Jackson County Circuit Court to 20 of the 55 charges he faced, including seven counts of rape, eight counts of sodomy and one count of first-degree assault.

Hayslett’s attacks took place between 2001 and 2003 and usually involved coercing women walking along south Kansas City streets to get into his white Ford Explorer, some at gunpoint. He would then take them somewhere and assault them, sometimes beating them with his gun and stealing their jewelry or purse.

One woman, who accepted a ride on a rainy day, escaped being raped but was beaten so severely her right leg was broken. She said Hayslett struck her with a handgun and later, after she fled from the vehicle, a board. She told police she ran for help on the broken leg after a passing car scared Hayslett off.

Police said the case came together about three years ago, when they began noticing similarities between several attacks in the same neighborhoods. One of Hayslett’s victims got the Explorer’s license number.
