Defendant gets 25-year sentence for murder

? One of four suspects in the shooting death of a Kansas City Symphony musician was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison.

Steven Peters, a 51-year-old double bass player, was killed in September 2005 at his Independence duplex in what Jackson County prosecutors described as a botched burglary.

Sylvon F. Sese, 21, of Independence, pleaded guilty in June to one count each of second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Jackson County Circuit Judge Steven Nixon sentenced Sese to 25 years on the murder charge and three years for armed criminal action, to be served concurrently.

Police have said the suspects planned to break into Peters’ home, tie him up and steal military-type firearms they believed he kept. But Peters greeted the burglars with a handgun and shots were fired, killing Peters and wounding one suspect in the arm.

Jonathan Box, 18, of Lee’s Summit, has also pleaded guilty and awaits sentencing.

Trials are scheduled in November for Michael Jones, 18, and Richard Jones, 22. Both defendants, who are unrelated, are from Kansas City.
