How they scored

FIRST QUARTER

9:36 – Robert Weeks 30 field goal. Northwestern State had great field position after a botch snap led to a partially blocked punt by Kyle Tucker. A six-play, 16-yard drive was enough to get the Demons in field goal position, and Weeks’ attempt doinked off the left upright and went through. (Northwestern State 3, Kansas 0).

6:31 – Robert Weeks 31 field goal. Another special-teams blunder by KU – this time a dropped snap – gave the Demons great field position again. NSU gained no yards on offense, but was close enough for an easy field goal anyway. (Northwestern State 6, Kansas 0).

4:32 – Marcus Henry 10 pass from Kerry Meier. Marcus Herford returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to the NSU seven-yard line, setting up an easy drive that didn’t come easily. Runs by Jon Cornish and Kerry Meier went for a total loss of three yards, before Meier found Henry in the corner of the end zone for the score. Scott Webb kick (Kansas 7, Northwestern State 6).

1:41 – Brian Murph 70 punt return. After a three-and-out by NSU, Murph fielded a punt at KU’s 30 and appeared doomed among a wall of players in the middle of the field. He squeaked out of the traffic jam, darted to the left sideline, broke a tackle and ran the distance for an impressive touchdown. Scott Webb kick (Kansas 14, Northwestern State 6).

SECOND QUARTER

8:20 – Jeff Foster recovered block punt in end zone. After a pressured Meier threw an interception in the red zone, NSU was three-and-out and lined up to punt from its own end zone. The low snap and heavy pressure doomed the Demons, and Dexton Fields got a clean block. Jeff Foster fell on the loose ball in the end zone. Scott Webb kick (Kansas 21, Northwestern State 6).

6:52 – Brian Murph 15 pass from Kerry Meier. A fumble recovery by Eric Washington gave the Jayhawks a short field to work with, and KU made short work of it. On the first play on offense, Meier found a wide-open Murph in the left side of the end zone and threw a perfect lob pass to him. Scott Webb kick (Kansas 28, Northwestern State 6).

THIRD QUARTER

10:34 – Robert Weeks 36 field goal. Northwestern State slowly sustained a drive that put the Demons in field-goal range. After strong KU defensive pressure stalled the drive, Weeks nailed the field goal. (Kansas 28, Northwestern State 9).

10:02 – Jon Cornish 69 run. KU’s first play on the ensuing drive was a handoff to Cornish, who went off right tackle, broke free to the outside and streaked down the NSU sideline, outrunning all of the Demon defenders for the score. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 35, Northwestern State 9).

1:23 – Robert Weeks 36 field goal. NSU benefited from a favorable bounce from Kyle Tucker’s punt and needed to go only 23 yards on seven plays to get three more points. Weeks set a school record with his fourth field goal of the game. (Kansas 35, Northwestern State 12).

FOURTH QUARTER

12:47 – Kerry Meier 1 run. KU sustained an eight-play, 74-yard drive, mainly on the ground. A 33-yard run by Jon Cornish put Kansas in the red zone, and back-to-back runs by Meier of 10 and one yards gave the Jayhawks the score. Scott Webb kick (Kansas 42, Northwestern State 12).

6:39 – Ben Bailey 3 pass from Ricky Joe Meeks. A 12-play, 80-yard drive helped by penalties and clutch passing finished with a short pass in the end zone for six. Meeks’ attempt at a two-point conversion fell incomplete in tight coverage. (Kansas 42, Northwestern State 18).

3:46 – Kerry Meier 31 run. A seven-play, 74-yard drive ended in impressive fashion, when Meier faked a handoff to Sharp, ran around the left edge, up the left sideline and into the end zone with a leap. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 49, Northwestern State 18).
