Meier likely for CU

It appears – for now – that injured Kansas University quarterback Kerry Meier will be back for the Jayhawks’ next football game: Saturday against Colorado.

“The doctors tell me there’s no structural problems,” KU coach Mark Mangino said. “Everything’s fine. He took reps (Sunday), and we’ll see how it goes. He wasn’t 100 percent, but we think there’s a good chance that he will be.”

Consistent with the almost surreal hex put on the position, Meier suffered a shoulder injury at the end of the third quarter of KU’s 36-35 loss to Baylor on Saturday. Scrambling out of a deteriorating pocket in the end zone, Meier was hit as he was angling toward the sideline. He landed on his right shoulder and rolled over the first-down marker and stayed down for a couple of minutes.

Since he was out of bounds on the Kansas sideline and the next play was fourth down, play continued while trainers looked at the freshman. Meier eventually got up, walked over to the Kansas bench and sat down for the rest of the game. He had an ice pack applied to his shoulder briefly and was shaking his arm for much of the fourth quarter.

Meier missed three games earlier this season with an injury to the same shoulder, but Mangino said this setback wasn’t as serious.

“At this point, we don’t anticipate it being the same scenario,” Mangino said. “As I said, (team doctor) Jeff Randall said there’s no structural damage, and he was very, very optimistic. So that’s where we stand on this.”

Nevertheless, Meier’s pain puts him in the back of a long line. Since 2002, Kansas has used 10 quarterbacks, and several were knocked out at some point because of injuries. Bill Whittemore, Adam Barmann and Jason Swanson all had shoulder problems, too.
