Olathe South edges LHS soccer, 3-1

The voice of Colin Flanders carried over the Youth Sports Inc. complex on Tuesday night.

“Communicate, white! Man on! Ball in the air!”

These weren’t simply mumbled suggestions by Flanders. The Lawrence High senior goalkeeper shouted from the top of his lungs like a crazed fan for 80 minutes against Olathe South, in an attempt to warn LHS players of on-the-field happenings.

Unfortunately, not enough Lions communicated. LHS (3-10-2) fell to Olathe South (7-9), 3-1.

“Communication could have been a lot better,” Flanders said. “It’s probably one of the most important things actually, because if you don’t do that, your team can fall apart without you knowing it.”

Olathe South had the ball in LHS territory for the majority of the first half. Although Flanders gave up three goals, he played well. He actually had close to 20 saves on the night. The Falcons just had too many shots on goal – 21, compared to the Lions’ eight.

“We’re a little too tentative right now,” Lawrence coach David Platt said. “A strong shot from the outside, even if it’s a deflection, that’s when most goals happen – on garbage and rebounds. We have to take shots to get those opportunities.”

Curtis Schultz put Olathe South up 1-0 with 27:09 remaining in the first half. It was a particularly interesting goal since Platt literally saw it coming. During an Olathe South corner kick, Platt shouted to his team to put a body on Schultz. LHS deflected the kick out of bounds, giving Olathe South another chance at a corner kick.

“Number four was left unmarked,” Platt yelled after the first corner kick. “If he was marked, you lost him.”

Right after he said that, Olathe South found Schultz (No. 4) for the goal.

Andy Howard and Jacob Wayland then scored two goals in less than a minute during the second half to put the game out of reach in Olathe South’s favor.

It wasn’t until 4:20 left in the game that the Lions got on the board. Senior Nathan Roush beat his defender and the O-South goalkeeper and tapped the ball into the back of the net with his right foot.

Tuesday marked Senior Night at the Youth Sports Inc. complex. Seniors Roush, Flanders, Kevin Calton, Ignacio Carvajal, Kyle Craig, Bryant Denning, David Liston, Will Nagengast, Logan Marienau, Ted Olson, Daniel Parker, Greg Payne, Caleb Quaye, James Taylor, Michael Valverde and Skyler Workman were honored before the game, in front of a crowd of roughly 75-100 people.
