City delays restrictions on Iowa Street turns

City commissioners want a second opinion on whether to restrict left turns along a section of Iowa Street.

Commissioners at their Tuesday evening meeting sent back to the Traffic Safety Commission a unanimous recommendation to prohibit left turns off Iowa Street onto Orchard Lane, Oxford Road, Stratford Road and University Drive from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The issue was sent back to the Traffic Safety Commission after the principal of Hillcrest School expressed concern that the restriction would cause more traffic to travel by Hillcrest, 1045 Hilltop Drive.

City Manager David Corliss said he was not certain that the school district had been properly notified of the potential change in the left-turn policy before it was considered by the Traffic Safety Commission in early October.

Commissioners did approve a separate Traffic Safety Commission recommendation denying any changes to the policy that essentially prohibits skateboards on the Kansas University campus.
