Patent rate lands KU in the top 10
Kansas University is making efficient use of its recent patent filings, according to a recent research report.
The university’s rate for attaining patents ranks ninth among U.S. and Canadian universities, according to a report from the Milken Institute, a think tank based in Santa Monica, Calif.
KU received 0.62 patent for each patent filed from 2000 to 2004, according to the report. That landed KU on a list topped by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine at New York University, which received 1.13 patent for each filing, and ahead of Wayne State University, which had a ratio of 0.61.
As of the 2006 fiscal year, KU had secured 45 patents and had 53 patents pending.
Fourteen companies have been formed as a result of KU research.
During the study period, the University of California had 278 patents issued.
