Closing arguments today in murder trial

Testimony ended Thursday in the second trial for Jay D. Decker, 27, who is accused in the abuse death of his 5-month-old daughter, Risha Lafferty, on Oct. 14, 2005.

Jurors will hear closing arguments today before deciding whether Decker is guilty of first-degree murder.

Douglas County Coroner Erik Mitchell spent much of Thursday on the stand, testifying about Risha’s numerous head injuries at the time of her death, including a fractured skull and signs of shaken-baby syndrome.

The defense called two witnesses, both women from Paola who testified that Risha’s mother, Brandi Mae Hendrickson, had abused her children.

Both women claimed to have seen Hendrickson strike or shake the couple’s older daughter when she was an infant.

Hendrickson has been charged with child endangerment for failing to report Risha’s previous injuries.

Decker did not take the stand.

His first trial ended in a mistrial this summer on the last day of testimony.
