Son found guilty in death of father

? A western Kansas man was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the death of his father after a jury said there wasn’t enough evidence to convict him of first-degree murder.

Jurors on Friday found Logan Shore, 20, guilty of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.

The state alleged during the four-day trial that Shore intentionally killed his father, Randall Shore, during a fight Jan. 21 in the basement of the family’s home in Stanton County.

The state is required to prove premeditation, as well as intent, for first-degree murder.

Shore’s sentencing was set for Dec. 7. Shore was taken back to the Stanton County Jail after the verdict was read and was being held without bond. He faces four years and seven months to more than 20 years in prison.

“We’re disappointed, obviously,” said Shore’s defense attorney, Richard Ney, as he stood outside the courthouse on Friday afternoon.

Ney said that while he was glad the jury saw that Randall Shore’s death was not premeditated or “cold-blooded,” the defense still contends that Logan Shore did not intentionally kill his father.

Logan Shore shot at his father six times with an assault rifle on the night of Jan. 21. Randall Shore was hit five times, two of which, Dr. Hubert Peterson testified during the trial, killed the 47-year-old father of three.

Ney argued during the trial that Logan Shore’s actions were the product of his father’s violence and abuse toward Logan Shore, his family and others.

Eugene Shore, Randall Shore’s father and Logan Shore’s grandfather, said the family was thinking of and praying for Logan.

“We all miss and loved Randy,” Eugene Shore said. “But we love Logan, too.”
