Judge gives jail time to man for public exposure

A Douglas County District Court judge Friday ordered a man with a history of exposing himself in public to be locked up in jail.

Judge Michael Malone sentenced Shawn M. Bedient for exposing himself to a 14-year-old girl near a school bus stop earlier this year.

The judge placed Bedient, who was 36 at the time of his arrest, on probation for one year but also ordered him to spend 60 days in the Douglas County Jail.

The incident happened in the spring near a bus stop in North Lawrence It took a jury in September only 15 minutes to convict Bedient of felony lewd and lascivious conduct. Bedient also has two prior convictions for indecent exposure.

The judge ordered him to register as a sex offender upon his release from jail.
