Advance ballots returned to sender

Mistake means some votes not going to ballot box

If you are voting by mail in advance of Tuesday’s general election, be sure and check the postage sticker on the return envelope.

Some advance ballot return envelopes have not had enough postage on them. County Clerk Jamie Shew said some older envelopes marked with 55-cent postage were sent out but all were supposed to have been updated with 63-cent stickers. Some envelopes, however, were sent without the new postage sticker.

“I know we’ve had a couple of people contact us and say the post office had returned them and we said to add the extra postage and send it, but the post office has been very good at just going ahead and sending them to us and then we pay it,” Shew said.

Shew said he thought about 10 advance ballot envelopes had come in to his office with postage due since advance voting began Oct. 18.

Ann Smith, of Lawrence, was one of those whose advance ballot was returned to her because of lack of postage. She contacted the clerk’s office and paid the extra postage to have it remailed. She said she was glad she hadn’t waited until the last minute to return her ballot before the election.

“It’s not over 55 cents, it’s over people’s votes not counting on account of people’s returned envelopes,” Smith said.
