City squads blanked at regionals
Leavenworth ? One defensive breakdown was all it took to cause a quick end to the postseason for the Lawrence High girls soccer team.
Leavenworth capitalized on a loose ball in the goal box early in the second half, and the Pioneers’ defense made it stand up, sending LHS to a 1-0 in a Class 6A regional opener at Warren Middle School.
“We just got one extra touch on the ball by a defender, and had it gone into Emma’s hands, we would have been fine,” said LHS coach Matt Anderson, referring to freshman goalkeeper Emma Lumpe. “Emma was probably right up on the 18 (yard line) or pretty close. As soon as the ball went to the Leavenworth player, she one-touched it in.”
Meanwhile, the Lions (5-9-3) could never get anything going offensively.
“In the second half we had several opportunities. It was one of those nights where it just wasn’t clicking,” Anderson said.
Free State (4-12-1) also lost its regional opener, falling 3-0 to host Manhattan.
