Ex-resident gets life for role in shooting
A former Lawrence resident has received a life sentence in prison for orchestrating a plot to kill a drug informant.
Andre L. Ivory, 30, was sentenced Tuesday in Kansas City, Kan., in a hearing before U.S. District Judge Kathryn H. Vratil. In December, a jury convicted him and his girlfriend, Pamela R. Tyler, 49, of planning an April 2004 shooting in North Lawrence that injured 28-year-old Tania Atkins.
Atkins, who had helped build a cocaine-dealing case against Ivory, was driving home from work when a car struck her van in North Lawrence and the other driver got out and started shooting.
The shooter was later identified as Kyle A. Crayton, of Kansas City, Kan. A bullet struck Atkins in the legs, but when Crayton’s gun jammed, she was able to get away and flag down police.
Tyler will be sentenced May 30. Crayton, 25, will be sentenced May 31. Kimberly M. Sanders, 28, Lawrence, who helped gain information about Atkins’ job and schedule, will be sentenced May 30.
Crayton’s getaway driver, Chaconie L. Edwards, 28, Lawrence, was sentenced to 84 months in prison.
