Burg paces LHS tennis

? Gardner Burg went 3-2 and placed 18th to lead Lawrence High’s entries in the Topeka West Tennis Invitational on Wednesday.

The Lions’ Ryan Robinson also went 3-2 and placed 25th.

In doubles, Thomas and David Nieto went 1-3 and placed 29th, and Curtis Wakeman-Hung Truong went 1-4 and placed 22nd.

“What a long day,” LHS coach Dick Wedel said, noting the Lions weathered two rain delays totaling about 21â2 hours. “We were lucky to get it all in. The TWIT is big – 15 teams from all over, lots of teams we never see. It’s nice to be invited to see what the reset of the state has to offer.”

Wedel was especially impressed with Gardner, who had two matches go to tiebreak.

“Can you believe Gardner,” Wedel gushed, “winning two tiebreaks and an 8-5 decision? He was winning the close matches today. He lost an 8-5 at the end, but everyone was pretty tired by then. He stayed positive and kept trying to work points.”

LHS will travel Tuesday to Sunflower League at Shawnee Mission East.
