LHS boys tennis earns two sweeps

Lawrence High’s boys tennis squad had some kind of day Tuesday, beating Leavenworth and Roeland Park Miege each, 4-0.

Gardner Burg and John McGrew each won two singles matches, and the tandems of Thomas Nieto and David Nieto and Justin Isbell and Anthony Frei each won two doubles matches.

“I would hesitate to say we are ‘peaking’ at this point … but as my chiropractor friend says, ‘We made some adjustments today,'” LHS coach Dick Wedel said.

“Biggest surprise? John McGrew let himself get buried 1-6, then figured out that he could lob and get the guy off the net. Final: 8-6 for John! Here is a guy who has played mostly JV who is getting smarter every day he plays.”

LHS will travel today to the daylong Topeka West Invitational Tournament. Thursday, LHS will play host to the Sunflower League JV tournament at the Lawrence Tennis Center.
