Lawrence officials to dedicate peace pole at KU

Another peace pole – one of eight such symbols in Lawrence designed to inspire thoughts of peace throughout the world – will be dedicated today on Kansas University’s campus.

The latest peace pole, which was donated by Kazumi Nakayama of The World Peace Prayer Society in Japan, will be dedicated at 5:30 p.m. today along the path between Haworth and Malott halls.

Lawrence Mayor Mike Amyx; Diana Carlin, dean of KU’s Graduate School and International Programs; Farashta Sediqzad, president of the International Student Assn.; and Nakayama will be among the speakers at the dedication ceremony.

The eight-foot, hand-crafted pole displays the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in eight languages – English, Spanish, Japanese, Shona, Farsi, Georgian, Turkish and Chinese. Leslie Green Renzelman, a KU alumna, worked with Nakayama to choose KU as a site. The Peace Pole project was started in Japan by the The World Peace Prayer Society, a non-profit, non-denominational organization.

The International Student Association and Phi Beta Delta are hosting the dedication ceremony, which will include a May Pole dance by Phi Beta Delta members.

Lawrence’s seven other peace poles are at Unity Church, Oread Friends Meeting, First Methodist Church, South Park, Ecumenical Christian Ministries, Unitarian Fellowship and Veterans’ Park.
