KU police recover some stolen uniforms

Kansas University police say they’ve started recovering some of the thousands of dollars worth of men’s basketball uniforms and warm-ups stolen last week from a locked trailer on campus.

No arrests had been made as of Thursday, but Capt. Schuyler Bailey said there were “several suspects” who were high school students and weren’t connected to KU.

The items disappeared last week after someone broke a padlock on the trailer, which was parked outside Anschutz Sports Pavilion. Police initially said it appeared the items were retail clothing, but the items turned out to be actual uniforms and equipment used by KU sports teams – most of it from the men’s basketball team.

Jim Marchiony, KU associate athletic director, said items taken included uniforms and sweatsuits used by current and former basketball players.

He estimated the value of items taken at between $6,000 and $10,000, and he said it appeared the thieves took the items “both to wear and definitely to sell.”
