Police see similarities in fast-food robberies

It’s been a bad week for fast-food restaurants in south Lawrence.

For the second time in three nights, clerks at a fast-food eatery along Iowa Street reported being robbed, and both restaurants gave Lawrence Police a similar description of the suspect.

On Tuesday night, clerks at Runza, 2700 Iowa, told police that about 9:05 p.m., a stocky, 5-foot-11-inch white man walked in with his hand in his pocket and demanded cash, then ran off toward the east, Sgt. Mike Monroe said.

“It was right around closing time,” Monroe said. “He didn’t show anyone a weapon.”

The description, Monroe confirmed, was identical to a man that clerks at Quizno’s, 2540 Iowa, said robbed them in the same manner Sunday night.

When asked whether the same man may have committed the robberies, Monroe said, “I think it would be fair to say that.”

So far, police have made no arrests, although they continued to search for a suspect in the area late Tuesday.

If one robber has committed both heists, police should have some evidence linking the two crimes.

Sunday, an officer spent time dusting Quizno’s tables for fingerprints while other officers went door-to-door in the neighborhood asking for descriptions of the suspect.

Now, at least three Runza employees have given police another detailed description, Monroe said.

Anyone with information regarding either robbery is asked to call 843-TIPS, an anonymous tips line.
