Lion Logan jumps for joy

Junior takes liking to high jump; Lawrence boys win, girls fall

It took all of two meets for Kevin Logan to find his second love.

“I planned on doing summer basketball, but now I’m just going to stick with this and then worry about basketball later,” Logan said. “Basketball’s still my first love, but I’m going to continue this.”

Now if only he can figure out a way to impress his coach.

The Lawrence High junior set a personal record in the high jump – clearing 6-feet, 4-inches to take first place at the Lawrence-Leavenworth dual Tuesday – but his performance only received a mild “Good job” from LHS coach Scott Stidham, who later added, “What do you want me to do, a backflip?”

Logan said he would love nothing better than to see it during his senior year.

“My goal before I graduate is 7 feet,” Logan said, referring to the school record. “That would probably get two backflips out of him.”

Though the junior did not compete in track last season, his early success has given him extra incentive to compete in an event he admits was an afterthought.

“I’m trying to stay in shape for basketball, but now it seems like more than just trying to stay in shape,” Logan said. “I actually have a goal now. I wanted to go to state, but I want to win now.”

Logan’s victory was one of 12 victories for the boys, who defeated Leavenworth, 91-59, in the dual.

For defending shot put state champion Scott Penny, the meet turned out to be a little tougher than expected.

The senior’s throw of 53-feet, 11-inches edged Leavenworth’s Victor Butler by just 18 inches.

Though the battle was unexpected, the senior said he welcomed the early challenge.

“It’s definitely to both of our advantages,” Penny said. “This is usually the type of competition you get at the end of the season, but I’ll take it whenever.”

The Lawrence High girls finished with seven victories against the defending state champions.

Courtney Barber added a pair of golds, winning both the high jump and the 400.

Leavenworth’s girls won the team title, 87-63.

“It was kind of hard for me because I know that they’re competitors and don’t let up on anybody,” Barber said. “They’re champions, and I think they want that again this year, but I think we’ll give them a run for their money.”

Amy Magnuson added firsts in 100 hurdles and triple jump, while Kelly Renfro won the 3,200 and placed second in the 1,600.

Nathan Hickey sprinted to the 100 and 400 titles, while Brandon Lassiter contributed a first (long jump) and two seconds (100, 200).

In all, Lawrence High had 112 participants at the dual meet.
