Police link two deaths to robbery

? A man who died in a murder-suicide at a variety store apparently planned to rob the store but did not intend to kill anyone, police said.

Matthew Towner, 29, shot co-worker Alicia Jo Harding-Huebler, 26, then killed himself at the Duckwall store on June 16.

Kiowa County Sheriff Galen Marble said Tuesday that the investigation found evidence that Towner wanted money to move to Las Vegas because of troubles with his wife, who lives in Chetopa.

“Everything we have shows that he talked about getting cash and going back to Vegas,” Marble said. “He talked with his father about how much he loved it there.”

A witness saw Towner carrying a long package into Duckwall’s during his dinner break the day of the shooting. Marble said the shotgun used in the killings came from a family member. It appears Towner retrieved the weapon while Harding-Huebler put the day’s receipts in the safe shortly after the store closed, he said.

Friends of the Towner family said he didn’t like firearms. His unfamiliarity with weapons, combined with nervousness about the robbery, likely caused him to accidentally discharge the shotgun, Marble said.

“There was another shot that hit the alarm box,” Marble said. “But we don’t know if that was a warning shot to scare her or whether it was afterward, out of frustration.”

Investigators think Towner spent an hour inside the store after killing Harding-Huebler before shooting himself just before officers arrived.

Marble said the investigation will be complete once toxicology reports are received.
