Giles sidelined by thumb injury

Kansas University junior forward C.J. Giles had surgery Wednesday to repair torn ligaments in his right thumb.

Giles, whose thumb bothered him much of last season, re-injured the same thumb Tuesday while dunking in a demonstration for KU coach Bill Self’s basketball campers. The 6-foot-11 Seattle native should be able to shoot the basketball in about three weeks. He’ll be without contact for six weeks.

“C.J.’s injury is much like Wayne’s (Simien) thumb injury against South Carolina his senior season,” Self said. “C.J. will be able to do individual workouts starting in two or three weeks. We expect a full recovery.”

Self said Giles, whose surgery was performed by Neal Lintecum at Lawrence’s Surgery Center, felt the thumb pop while dunking Tuesday.

“He had injured the thumb during the season several times,” Self said. “He had it taped (at practice). This might have reinjured it. It’s unfortunate it happened to him, but I do not think missing three weeks will set him back much.”

KU sophomore Mario Chalmers said: “I believe C.J. will come back and be better than ever. He’ll still be able to work out.”

Giles averaged 6.2 points and 4.8 rebounds as a sophomore. He started 13 of 33 games.
