Authorities continue search for suspect

There’s still no sign of a former Lawrence resident who disappeared earlier this summer shortly before he was to stand trial for sexually abusing a young female acquaintance.

Richard C. Clarke, 37, is charged with seven counts, including rape and aggravated indecent liberties with a child, for incidents that allegedly happened in 1997. He was charged in 2000, but the case was dismissed because the victim – who was age 5 when the alleged assaults happened – was living out of state with a family member who wouldn’t cooperate with prosecutors.

After the girl went into state custody in another state, prosecutors here refiled the case in 2005. Clarke was brought back to Kansas and released on $45,000 bond, but he failed to show at his June 19 trial date.

On Friday, Judge Paula Martin ordered his bond forfeited. If Clarke is arrested again, he’ll face a new bond of $100,000.
