Auction to aid in cancer fight

Christian Faulkner, 6, of Lawrence has been fighting cancer since November. This weekend a fundraiser in his honor will be held at Lawrence High School to help with his family's medical expenses.

Christian Faulkner’s cancer hasn’t gone away.

“He’s doing pretty good,” said the Lawrence youngster’s mother, Amanda Faulkner. “He’s running around. His cell count is coming back up, but it’s not to the point where he can start chemo (therapy) again.”

Faulkner said she hoped to enroll her 6-year-old son at Sunflower School in the fall.

“He’ll have to retake kindergarten,” she said.

Doctors discovered a tumor on top of Christian’s lungs shortly after Thanksgiving 2005. His treatment has been the subject of previous Journal-World stories.

His family and friends plan a silent auction from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in the Lawrence High School cafeteria, 19th and Louisiana streets, to help offset medical expenses.

“We’ve probably spent $10,000 in the last eight months,” Faulkner said. “We have no savings to speak of – we’ve gone through all that we had.”

Auction items include autographed basketballs from Kansas University’s men’s and women’s 2006 basketball teams, two tickets to the KU football team’s season opener and dozens of gift packs and certificates.
