LHS swimmer Boyer adds 200 free to state stash

Alex Boyer knows he’s headed to next month’s state swimming and diving championships.

His next objective is to make sure some of his Lawrence High teammates get to tag along.

Boyer racked up his second state berth in as many meets Tuesday, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 54.60 seconds at a five-team LHS Invite.

However, his focus after the meet was on two relay events where, despite a victory and a solid third-place finish, the Lions fell just short of breaking the state-qualifying standard.

“To me, the relays are the most exciting part,” Boyer said. “Personally, I think we’re going to get it this weekend.

“I can easily cut time. We have several points where we can knock off little bits of time and come that much closer. It’s just a matter of what clicks on that particular day.”

So far, Boyer’s freestyle stroke has done just that. After dominating the 200 on Tuesday, he was back at it in the 200 freestyle relay. Swimming the anchor leg, he overcame a sizable deficit, combining with Tavis Sartin, Marcus Barnoskie and Zach Henderson on a time of 1:40.05, just .34 seconds ahead of runner-up Olathe Northwest.

Boyer, Henderson, Jeff Standing and Zach Stites also took third in the 400 free relay in 3:42.79.

Boyer’s freestyle was also in fine form last week, when the lanky sophomore qualified for state in the 500 in his first event with the Lions following his club season with the AquaHawks.

The stroke that needs improvement is the butterfly, after a third-place finish in Tuesday’s 100 in 1:00.91.

“That was not so good,” Boyer said.

Except in the final team standings, where Boyer’s collection of top-three showings helped lead LHS to second place on the final team leaderboard with 328 points.

Olathe Northwest won the team title with 399 points.

“That’s a good finish for us,” LHS coach Ryan Adams said. “There were some good teams here.”
