Tonganoxie police searching for armed robber

Using a dog and a helicopter, police in Tonganoxie spent about three hours Sunday night and this morning searching for the suspect in an armed robbery at a fast-food restaurant.

The search was called off shortly after 1 a.m. today, and as of 9 a.m. no one had been arrested.

The suspect came into the Subway store at 886 Northstar Ct. about 9:55 p.m. claiming to have a handgun and left with an undetermined sum of money, police said. He was described as a white male in his late 20s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 140 to 150 pounds, wearing blue jeans and a gray hooded sweatshirt with orange writing.

A helicopter from Topeka and a police dog from Olathe were called to assist in the search, which covered about a square-mile near the store including barns and wooded areas. The search ended shortly after 1 a.m.
