? Lawrence High boys basketball coach Chris Davis just didn’t take enough extinguishers Tuesday to Shawnee Mission South.

“They came out just on fire,” Davis said. “Everything they shot went in.”

The result was a 77-52 Lawrence High setback and a festive night for SM South faithful, who saw senior standout Ryan Jehle break the career school scoring record held by former Kansas University guard Greg Gurley.

Jehle finished with 25 points to lead all Raiders. Chance Riley led Lawrence High with 15 points, while Tyler Knight chipped in 14 points.

Lawrence (9-6) altered its game plan after going down 42-27 at halftime. The Raiders, though, adjusted as well, and were able to keep building on their lead.

“They were able to keep their lead just by being patient,” Davis said. “We made two or three runs. It looked like we were going to be able to close the gap.”

Lawrence High's Daniel Green (42) drives against Shawnee Mission South's Ryan Jehle. LHS lost, 77-52, Tuesday night in Overland Park.

While Jehle stole the show and led all scorers, the hot hand of David Kovarik kept Lawrence away throughout. Kovarik finished with 21 points.

“It was one of those nights where everything fell for them,” Davis said. “We just shot average, and that doesn’t work when the other team is like they were.”

Lawrence dropped to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in Sunflower League play with the setback, while SM South stayed in the hunt for the league crown by improving to 8-7 and 6-2.

The Lions will look to get back on track Friday when they play at Shawnee Mission West.
