Chiefs tap ex-KU aide

David Gibbs, a former Kansas University assistant football coach, has been named secondary coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Gibbs was KU’s secondary coach under Glen Mason during the 1995 and 1996 seasons. Gibbs, who was defensive coordinator at Auburn last season, coached the Denver Broncos defensive backs from 2001-2004.

Also Tuesday, new Chiefs coach Herman Edwards announced the hiring of Jon Embree as tight ends coach. Embree, a UCLA assistant the last three years, played at Colorado and spent 10 years there as an assistant coach. Edwards, the former New York Jets coach, retained five of retired coach Dick Vermeil’s assistants, including defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham and offensive boss Mike Solari.

Solari also has KU ties. He was the Jayhawks’ offensive line coach under Mike Gottfried from 1983 to 1985.
