Task force captures fugitive from Topeka

A fugitive from Topeka who’d been wanted for nearly six years turned up this week in Lawrence.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service announced Thursday that a multi-agency task force had arrested Maynard T. Yates, 47, after getting a tip that he was staying in a home in southeast Lawrence.

U.S. Marshals, along with officers from the Kansas Department of Corrections and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, caught Yates about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday after he ran out the back door of a home in the 1000 block of Home Circle near 24th Street and Haskell Avenue.

Yates has convictions for drug possession and aggravated robbery and had been wanted since April 2000, when he absconded from parole supervision.

“He’s just one of those people who just dropped out of sight,” said Troy Schuster, a U.S. Marshals spokesman. “He must have relocated to that area, because he was well-known in the Topeka area.”
