Another shooting strikes Ottawa

Police arrest suspect after someone shoots at vehicle carrying two occupants

? December has been a month of violence in Ottawa.

Police Thursday night were kept busy with the second street-shooting incident in two weeks. Unlike the earlier incident, no one was hurt.

“This is uncommon,” Ottawa Police Capt. Randy Allan said. “It’s been a bad December.”

Wayne E. Scott, 36, of Pomona, was being held Friday in Franklin County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Charges were pending.

Scott was arrested for allegedly shooting at a vehicle in the Second Street dam area of Ottawa. The occupants of the vehicle were identified by police as Scott’s wife, Crystal A. Scott, 27, and Levi A. Bradley, 21. The victims escaped without injury and drove to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office for help, Allan said.

The vehicle had been struck in the front center of the hood with a round thought to have been fired from a shotgun, Allan said. The suspect chased the victims until they stopped at the sheriff’s office, Allan said. The details of where and how Scott was later arrested were unavailable Friday.

The incident follows a shooting Dec. 19 that wounded a man about to testify in a Douglas County aggravated battery case. Three suspects were charged Thursday in that shooting. A fourth suspect is still being sought. Prosecutors said the shooting was a conspiracy to keep the victim from testifying.

Allan said he thinks the two shootings in a short time span are coincidental. It could have been worse, he said.

“Either one or both of these could have been fatal incidents,” Allan said. “I’m feeling pretty good that we’ve got people arrested in both cases.”
