Denver Post nominates KU senior for award

Candice Bondank, a senior theater/voice major at Kansas University, has been nominated for one of the 2006 Denver Post Ovation Awards. Bondank was named as a finalist for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her performance in “Sweeney Todd” at the Creede Repertory Theatre.

This year, 31 Colorado theater companies and 70 productions received at least one nomination for an Ovation Award. The Denver Post chooses the finalists from the 164 plays and musicals its five critics observed in 2006. The Post’s winners, which will be announced Dec. 31, will be chosen by theater critic John Moore.

The Creede Repertory Theatre, which was begun more than 40 years ago by a group of KU theater students, received 11 Ovation Award nominations, including “Sweeney Todd” as Best Musical.

Bondank is from Overland Park and is a graduate of Shawnee Mission South High School. She studies voice at KU with Joyce Castle, professor of music and dance, and has appeared in several university theater productions.
