Former KU player charged with felony

A former Kansas University football player is charged with a felony stemming from an auto burglary over the weekend.

Jerome M. Kemp, a senior from Wichita who played safety for KU, was charged Tuesday with motor-vehicle burglary, a felony, and two misdemeanors, theft of items worth less than $1,000 and criminal damage to property, according to Douglas County court records.

Kemp turned himself in to police Monday after a 22-year-old woman told police he had smashed the driver’s side window of her Volkswagen Jetta, which was parked in the 2500 block of West Sixth Street, and stole CDs and other items.

He posted $2,250 bond Tuesday, jail officials said.

Jim Marchiony, KU associate athletic director, said the incident won’t affect Kemp athletically because he has used up his eligibility.

It was not the first time Kemp has been in trouble with the law. In July, he was charged in Douglas County with misdemeanor criminal damage to a vehicle based on a Feb. 4 incident. That case is still pending.

Kemp will appear in court on both cases Tuesday.
